Need input on this one, it I were to convert the new column I just built to a dual purpose reflux, where would be the best level to install the pass through tubing? A, B, C, or D levels or some where else?

"Get your reflux crossovers as high as you can.

This will allow for better vapor stacking or more specifically better fractioning.

Cooling to low on your column will not allow the alcohols with lower boiling points to stack at the top of your column as efficiently. This can make for smearing.

A dephlegmator styled condencer that was capable off 100% reflux just below your take off lateral would be awsome."

Sparky, Here's what I'd do. Instead of drilling & placing tubes I'd use a double coiled copper tube with copper pot scrubbers stuffed in the center. Inlet & outlet could just pass through the rubber plug in the top. You can find a bunch of info on these coils over at homedistillers.org The boka-bob boys use these

What I was thinking about was putting a fitting in the side where I could put a single cooling probe in the column when I wanted to use a reflux process and take it out when i'm not. If i'm running chilled water wouldn't a single probe be enough for the reflux action?

Maybe, but even with a lot of packing I'd wonder about the thermal dispersion from only a single tube. Still think a coil dropped down the top w/packing in the center would be a good solution that would require no fab, other than tube bending. If you weren't happy with the performance then you've not made any changes to your column and can easily try another method.

Besides, with an insert-able coil you could have long feed lines & try out the various depths you marked on your picture

I am going to have to do some figuring on the coil, I like that idea though. It is going to be very tight quarter to get it in.

look over on homedistillers.org especially the bokabob designs. It has a drop in coil & I've seen posts on how to bend the coils properly
