"I have a brewhaus stainless filtering system. I cut my run 85% to 50% .
I used coconut carbon . boiled three time and rinsed every time. Let set for about 5 hours . packed the tube . had two filters at the bottom . filled the bowl at the top. filterd all nite. check the gravity this morning it had dropped to 30% any ideas. thanks. fish lips"

How big a difference was there in the start to finish temperature?

the temp was around 50 and finish 52f

The temperature change wouldn't have made that much difference. Did you get the column water/alcohol switch at the right point. The column holds about 175 ml, if you had much water in it that could easily change the proof reading that much. I can't figure out what else could make that much difference.

"I dont think you can check the --- gravity -- of finished likker?????
If the carbon was really wet, as you pour your hooch through the tube, it would push the water out before the likker started to run. I always taste the falling liquid until it starts to run likker and then put my collection cup under.
If you were cleaning a small amount of likker that amount of water could lower the proof by dilluting the finished product. You'll know nest time so dont fret over it. You know -- live and learn."

I just got my Brewhaus Stainless Carbon filter and 27 lbs of stone carbon to use. The unit came with no instructions so do you cut pieces of filter paper to fit the bottom Tri-Clamp fitting where the fitting with the flex hose goes? That seems to be the only reason to have a tall thin Stainless tube, I assume is filled with wet carbon? If so how many layers 3?
[COLOR="Red"]Update[/COLOR], found the manual online. Only question left is cut 3 filter paper layers the same diameter as the Tri-Clamp fitting and use the paper with no washer? I'm not sure the washer and 3 layers will fit. Please advise here.

Be sure when you start that , first clamp off the plastic tube. Then fill the column with warm water and start spooning your just boiled carbon into the column. When it's full wait till the water drains down to the top of the carbon and then pour in your liquor. You should be able to feel the difference in the temperature of the liquor and the water that it is forcing out of the column. When the liquor gets down towards the bottom of the column start tasting it, you should have no problem figuring out when the liquor starts to come out. Then start collecting. Don't pack the carbon in the column, if you tap the column when you are adding the carbon it will pack and it will take forever to filter your booze. There should be a O ring in the end cap of the column, use it. When all of your booze is drained down to the top of your column (finishing up) then pour in a quart of so of warm water and follow it down the column to get all of the liquor out, when the warm water gets down towards the bottom of the column start tasting again and when the water shows up quit."

That will make it real easy for me. As to the quantity do you measure by volume before the boil or just fill the tube with dry then boil? I do not think by weight will be real useful. Thanks."

I think I just made sure I had enough to fill the tube and then boiled it, it doesn't matter if you have a little extra since you just use it again the next time. I do boil it just before filling the column though. Just make sure that the column is either full of water or booze and don't let it run dry. I can filter 6 gallons on one cycle. Then I boil the carbon a couple of times and cook it in the oven for the next filtering job. I've been using the same carbon for over a year now."

div4gold, Thanks again. I wish I could use my oven, but it is gas and there were lots of warnings on that. I may look at one of those hand held steam cleaners and do steam cleaning on the back porch. May go to a restaurant supply store and buy a full sheet cake pan and hope my cat does not think it is a litter box while drying...

I don't really think there is any alcohol left in it when I put it in the oven, hardly any smell at all and that's probably oils. I read somewhere that just boiling it gets a 80-90% recovery. The actual baking in the oven just cooks out the remaining oils. I wouldn't tell you to use a gas oven but I wouldn't think you'd blow anything up if you boiled it good before you used the oven. I use a glass cake pan when I put it in the oven. Good luck :)"

Sorry another one. The book/manual (from Brewhaus) says to pour boiling water over it and pour off 4-5 times. Do you actually boil it or pour boiling water over it? Does it matter?

"Mongoose......the first time you fill your tube with carbon it should be boiled to clean it really good. Now thats it in the tube and you've used it 2 or 3 times, pour boiling water right down the tube. I usually set up my stand and boil about a qt or so of water maybe more, and pour it through -- let it run and keep checking with my finger to see when it starts running hot. I also taste it for hooch. Now remember once you have poured water through the carbon WILL hold water. So now you pour likker into the tube but dont collect for keeps yet....... lots of water will come first and if you add all of that to the keeper jug it will dilute the end product. Keep tasteing until the good stuff starts comeing and then collect. simple really once you understand whats happening inside the tube. I pour 120 proof likker into my filter cause one time I did'nt know about the eccess water and ended up with 60 proof likker. Thats ok if thats what you want ---- just know that will happen. Hope this helps."

Thanks heeler, parts I understood, thanks to you I think I have it all together. in a week I will be ready for my first run, assuming my shipment goes out today as scheduled. Main reason is my yeast is in the order. I hope to do my water test on Sunday, my friend and I with our new toyz (we ordered on day apart).... We do not have a mentor but both have 20+ years brewing experience with beer. Just need to learn the new processes.

Does it matter? I believe what you are refering to is before the first use, that gets the dust out of it and preps it. On the recycling of the carbon I boil it and pour it off twice. By the second boil you should hardly have any smell in the vapors coming off of it. When I'm getting ready to filter , the night before I put it in water and let it sit until I get ready the next day. I boil it just before putting it in the column. Works good for me."
