"Ok, I have distilled a sugar wash with the full column of the PSII and loved it, easy to use and to be quite honest idiot proof as long as you have done some homework. Now I want to make bourbon/corn whiskey and will only use the top half of the column(condenser and so on). mY question is should I still run water through the column as well as the condenser? As I read it seems I shouldn't but what do I do about those inlets/outlets? Leave the tubing on them and make sure the valve is closed so no water is flowing through? How about a little copper mesh for packing. I read where it might be beneficial to have that in the short column?
Just looking for advice and ideas.

Thanks"

I'd take the tubes off just as a caution that they don't deform if they overheat. I do mostly potstill mode and don't have the tubes on mine while I'm doing that. I also put 2 of the copper mesh plugs in the column in potstill mode. I had been pushing the plugs up to the top of the column but the last time I had them at the bottom and I got a better result.

do I leave the inlets/outlets on the column open? or place something over them? Seems like a way to have waste?

Those little tubes going through the column are welded to the column. None of the vapors can escape through them. If you look at it in just the opposite manner none of the water you pump through them when your in reflux can get into the column.

Im sitting here laughing at my stupidity, it must have been the fumes from distilling yesterday. Thank you for pointing that out to me. BigGrin
