"Hello ,, I have researched many different sites about methyl. I get very confused .. One person will say you will go blind others say there is nothing to worry about if you disgaurd the first 50ml .. I guess my question is how do the Large distillers get the methanol out of there product and if I am using sugar and cornmeal for mash should I worry about methanol as long as i get rid of the first 50ml.. Thanks"

I believe 50 -100 ml is the standard amount to get rid of with a 5-6 gallon batch and that would increase most likely if doing bigger batches. Im sure that commercial distillers have very sophisticated equipment for determining where to do cuts to get rid of the methanol but keep some heads and some tails so as not to lose too much product. I believe the #'s we use (50 -100ml) is overkill but its safer to do this and that small amount is silly to even think about worrying about as thats just 2 shots. From what I have read it is a poison but unless you were separating this and drinking just this the dilution would most likely just give you a headache but lets play it safe and use it as weed killer.

"I think you will find that this methanol/blindness is largely an urban myth generated during the good old days of prohibition. Commercial distillers with continuous distillation systems don't remove it. That explains why you get a headache with store bought and not with home distilled.
I always toss the first 100ml or so away but not for the reasons of going blind but it tastes shithouse. It's a good practice, but not for the reasons generally quoted.
And the answer to your question about your wash, no."
