"I have ordered some oak barrels from barrels source and was going to just use them at first to age sugar wash spirits but now that I have read that the barrels lose effectiveness over uses I am rethinking this. Should I go with a good whiskey or rum recipe instead? Confused

I also ordered a 2d bucket from here to double up on runs. patience may be a virtue but it takes too damn long!"

"I would save the barrel for a whiskey run. Oak chips are great for anything else, particularly for a sugar wash. If its heavily toasted, I would use it for a corn based mash, perhaps twice, then either a rum or scotch type mash.

On the other hand, you can extend the efficacy of those barrels by adding chips to speed things up, and make the barrel last much longer for its original intended use.

Lots of playground here."

I've been reading...and reading....and reading about UJSM recipe. That's the way I'll go for the barrels I think. Then like you say, rum. I'm pretty stoked! Opens up a whole new world other than sugar and turbo yeast! even though that ain't all bad.
