I have 2 different reflux towers, made of shc 40 ss pipe, with no packing in them, one just has 2 one half inch cooling pipes welded in it horizontal, about 9' apart, I just guessed at it when it was built, both are 36' tall 2' in diameter. The other is a 2' tower with a 3' jacket around it,It does not have any horizontal cooling pipes in it & has not ben tried as of yet ,& I was wanting to know that if I put scrubbers in it,and put cooling water on the jacket, would it help or hinder the the percent of the alcohol? I have heard a lot of people say insulate the tower, but has anyne tried to use a cooling jacket on their tower, & what happened. Hope someone can help. Thanks.

i WOULD THINK THAT COOLING THE TOWER WITH WATER WOULD BE DEFETEING THE PURPOSE OF THE TOWER. tHE VAP0OR IS SUPPOSED TO RISE TO THE COOLIING COOLS AND THEN THE DIFFERENCE INTHE TEMPS CAUSES THE ALCOHOL TO FORM AND DROP OFFIN DROPLETTS. uNLESS IM MISTAKEN THIS IS THE WAY THE PROCESS WORKS. cOOLING THE TOWER SEEMS TO ME LIKE YOU ALCOHOL AND EVERYTHING ELSE GOES BCK DOWN THE TUBE!!! NOT AN EXPER BUT THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE TO ME...............LET ME KNOW...JIMBULL

hmmmm i see what your saying jimbull but once the water in the jacket got hot it would make one hell of an insulater.....i wouldn't have it sealed off leave a small hole to let presure out it could get pretty hot ....hmmmmmmm you know if you leave the water out the air space would make a good insulater too
