"Has anyone used Honey Granules in a wash? You can find them at http://www.breadbeckers.com and they are honey with sucrose. I am going to start a batch with them today using 15# of the granules along with the Prestige 48hr turbo. I will keep everyone posted on the results. The wash should resemble mead when it's finished fermenting. I am going to try to get it to 16-18%, then I may keep some to drink straight and distill the rest in my easystill. What filter media would you use to clarify the wash for drinking straight? I don't want to waste any carbon but I do have access to 5 micron filter bags."

It worked just like sugar wash. After distillation and carbon there was no odor or flavor.

"The ABV on the first run through the easystill was 50-55%. I saved this and filtered through stone carbon to achieve very clean spirit at 50% ABV.
The cost is another factor you need to look at. I was given a 50# bag of honey granules for free. It was purchased at BreadBeckers in GA and you can look at their website to see the cost.
I am at the stage where the sugar isn't the main concern. Provided you have a carb source that is as free from cellulose as possible, you can produce really good 100 proof spirit with little cost.
Using the good turbo at $4-5 per pack is the highest single cost per volume...but well worth it. I am in the process of making several batches of really good peppermint schnapps to give as holiday gifts to friends.
You can purchase essential oils at HobbyLobby and many pharmacies for making candy, and you can purchase flavorings at the local supermarket. I use 15ml agave nectar, as a sweetner added to 15ml of clean spirit, as a dilutent. After mixing, I add 1ml of peppermint extract from McCormic or .5ml of essential oil for the finished product.
I have several wineries close by and I am using wine bottles and corks for the gift bottles. I hope this is useful.....Cheers!!"
