What I do is take a strip of the mesh, about twice the length of the entire, total column length, and slide it into the column from the bottom, up to the cooling pipes. I have the one piece column, and it takes a bit of time and patience to get the mesh past the support for the screen at the bottom of the column, but it goes. It may be a bit easier to cut the strip in 1 to 3 pieces, to make it easier. Since you have the 2 piece column, then the packing should be easier for you, by loading both above and below the break. But I dont know specifically, because I cheaped out, only getting the 1 piece. Anyway, pack the copper in tight enough to be snug, but not too tight to restrict vapor flow, lest you have a bomb on your hands. Directly above the cooling lines, take 1 or 2 small pieces and pack them in there, so the top of the mesh is just below the entrance to the condenser tube. I always blow through the bottom of the column to check that the air goes through easy enough, just for piece of mind. The manual says to use 'plugs' made out of 3-1/2 4 feet of mesh. It says that is 'sufficient for one plug'. Given that it mentions 'plugs' in plural, it would seem to me, that you would need to use more than 1. That seemed like way too much, and the amount I specified at the top, works well enough for me. Also, be sure to remove the copper when you are done stillin'. I clean mine with some vinegar/salt and warm water mix, rinse well and let it dry on paper towles, to prevent tarnish. It's about 30 pages but is well worth printing out. It tells you everything, step by step. I found it really calming and handy for my initial runs, as I am generally a skeptical pessimist with bad luck, when I try something new.

The length of copper needed in order to roll a 'plug' of the right diameter is very dependent on how tightly you roll it. Most of those that I have spoken to, and myself as well, find that 4' or just under will roll into a plug that fits snug into the column, but will not be so compressed that it will restrict vapor flow. You will need approximately 6 'plugs' to fill the column from the bottom to the cooling lines.

Although we originally did include a small package of rings for around the cooling lines, the feedback that we were getting was such that we discontinued this. It apparently caused more confusion than anything, so now we just suggest tucking a few pieces of the mesh around the lines.
