"The time to heat the stuff is quite long. usually about 90 minutes or more for approx 5 gallons. I am using a propane burner underneath the metal plate supplied with the unit. Will it harm the pot to place it directly on the burner? (removing the metal plate) There has to be a way to get up to temp quicker!!!!!!!!!"

EGH, Welcome to the Brewhaus Forum! Way back when, I never really got the official scoop on the aluminum difusser plate. However, from personal experience, if you are heating with an LP 'jet" type burner the plate is probably a good thing. If it's just the typical round (turkey fryer) type burner then I would NOT use the plate. I think is may also be beneficial for folks using an electric hotplate as their heat source. I would highly recommend that you insulate your pot. Depending on the size/style...and the fact you're heating with LP, you won't be able to insulate to the bottom. But insulating, safely, as much as you can (including the top and your tower) will GREATLY improve the performance of your unit and reduce your initial heat up time. Hope this helps! :)

"Welcome EGH!
Exactly, ditto everything Flyboy said.
When I bought mine, the directions said the Al. plate was to help with a hot plate cycling. Several weeks ago, it was posted that it helped prolong the actual pot bottom when useing LP.?? I disagree. Its important to remember, that with a uniform and gentle flame like a turkey burner, even at a pretty good flame going, you are never going to exceed 212° F or 100° C, unless boiled dry which should never happen. I get boil with 13 gal. in a keg with propane about that amount of time. About 5 years and no problems.
And Yes, insulate!"
