i am thinking about using a new 5 gallon paint can as my distiller. i have herd of people using them, and have seen pictures of them. most are coated inside, but still unsure about if they are safe to use. does anyone know if a paint pail makes a good boiler or not? thanks for any information you can give me

I seem to be resurrecting an old thread, but in my experience nothing but stainless or copper in a still.steel will eventually rust, and the painted liner may not withstand hot liquids.please keep it safe folks!

Let's put this in perspective. I'd much rather pay for commercial drink than attempt to make my own with improper equipment. What we are making is a powerful solvent, if it can eat the coating off of that bucket, it will. Do you want that coating inside you, or a loved or a friend? Do you want to be on the next episode of 'House'? This is one of those things that is best done properly or not at all. I'm sure that someone before has used a paint bucket, or even worse, but we are advising you not to do it.

"Many Gents might also advise that an aluminum boiler is not best.

My first boiler was aluminum. I got more than a year out of it before it started to show signs that it would spring a pin hole leak.

It never did while in use, but it would have.

It'll be fine with your likker but you should expect to replace that boiler in a year or less.

If your heating with flame the forthcoming leak will be very bad."
