Some like it. It essentially will do a second distillation in one run. Be forewarned though, its called a thumper for a reason, and the sound carries a good ways."

bout how much can i expect the thumper to slow down the distilling process? and bout how much will it reduce the volume i will get? thanks again for any info."

"i have never used a thumper, so can only report what I have learned from others. Very few use them anymore, as they were more important for use with uncontrolled heat of wood fires.

The thumper was filled with either new mash, or preferred some left over tails or distillate. Once your column is produceing hot vapor, you will have to wait until the thumper is heated also. I wouldn't think you would lose any alch.. but volume will be less, as the ABV will be higher.

Most now do the same result by adding just a bit of reflux into their column.

thanks for that information, with what all i have read, and what you said, its all making a little more since now. I'm using electric heat, so i don't think I'm going to use one. thanks again"

"Greetings All,
I started running my thumper in order to reduce the aggragate time I was spending on set up, break down and of course stilling.

My unit heats up very fast as I get a buch of thermal transfer into the thumper from the design.

However, forcing too much heat can smear cuts a bit, but the abv stays up (for a potstiller).

I am experimenting with a quasi refining (orb/lentil) cooled with recirculating water in a stainless dish.

I hope to further increase my input and retain crisp cuts. And of course produce a potstilled flavor profile.

We shall see."
