I wanted to say Hi to all of you out there. I just joined the forum. I have been reading the the homedistillers.org forum and built two stills from the info there. they worked but not to my liken as I was planing the third the wife suggested I buy the PSII 2" from Brewhaus. I am enjoying it very much. The quality of the licker is getting much better. At this time I have only been able to get 85% from the still. I am using a 50,000 BTU Bayou burner for the heat source, I tried the hotplate route but the cycling was causing problems and slow to get started. I was wandering if I need to insulate the still and column. what I do now is run it hot until I get to about 160F and start the water in the top of the column and condenser when it starts output I back down the heat to get a small stream running the cooling full blast. I have plenty of heat so I didn't think I needed to insulate. My thoughts are that the the heat loss from the column would help condense the water out from the hooch and increase the fractionating. I packed the lower column with copper mesh not getting the 90+ output I then added mesh to the top column didn't help. So what are your thoughts. Thanks Missouri Bootlegger

"Hi and welcome.
Insulate your column for sure. Yes, it condenses on the column and then runs back down into the pot without refluxing as it does in the mesh. That will mess with your quality.
If you got the 2"" unit, you will want to take off slower than a stream. More reflux- less heat. When you hit tails, you can increase speed as fast as she will cope.
A stripping run, then a spirit run will help you a lot."
