"folks, i have not distilled anything yet -- still reading and researching. my question is this: how much does the end of the run smell? does it carry over 100 feet? am i going to stink up the neighborhood? given that it is an illegal occupation and i plan to do this outdoors, i do have a secluded area in my backyard, but the smell is a concern. Do i have anything to worry about?

thank you"

"If your outside you should be fine, but there may be a slight beer (ish) smell when you dump your wash.

If you let your system (and spent wash) cool completely before clean up, you will greatly reduce air born odor.

But it's not bad at all really. I don't think the odor will carry.

But maybe I don't even notice anymore. I smell like stillage more often than not prolly.
Hopefully you'll get more input.

Good luck
LT"

Me too, only sour mashed.

Very little go away smell (from the stillage). I also often will smoke a picnic roast, turkey or some salmon on a wood and charcoal fire just to make it fun. Not worried about neighbors here. Next one is 2 miles away.

I dump what lees I want to discard down the toilet. Keeps the septic system active and healthy. Lately have been thinking of boiling them to add as nutrients for the next ferment. Spent grains go to the birds and disapear quickly.

Cheers"

I ran my first batch yesterday afternoon and could hardly smell it, which was sort of a relief as I live in a neighborhood with plenty of houses around. Wink
