"Hello,
I'm about to distill my very first batch this week. I've been collecting and re-reading a lot of how-to's.
I have some remaining questions that I will ask gradually as necessary.
My new still is a dual-purpose, Mile Hi Reflux/Potstill still (32 quart)
My main goal is to distill flavored spirits (rums, whiskeys, brandies). But, I know I will need to practice with neutral spirits.
I don't have a column for activated charcoal filtering. Is there a simpler setup I can use? (Note, I'm unfortunately not a big DIY guy).
I've seen suggestions for putting charcoal in the ferment and putting the distillate in jars with activated charcoal. But, I'm not sure what I should do?
Any suggestions on an effective purification system using charcoal and coffee filters or such?

"*Stay away from turbos. *Don't shoot for more than 14% (10-12% is better,,,,,or less). *Let your wash clear (refridgerated/chilled helps alot). *Strip your wash first, then dilute to 40% or less for the spirit runs.
Do these things and you won't need to filter.
If you are going to make flavored spirits,then make em. You can always redistill into a nuetural if you make an error on your cuts.
Some gents only make vodka when they are fixing a mistake.
Get your self a good rum recipe and get started on that. Don't expect to get those familiar rum notes till the third generation or so.
You can do this."

"I have a column for charcoal filtering and I hated it. I put the finished product into a carbouy or smaller jug with carbon and shake or swirl once a day or whenever. Makes it much cleaner than the column filter and so much easier. I like the big carbouy, as I can just pour out what I want, and allow the rest to continue to clean. cut it to 50% or less before doing this.
That column you have should make a good pot still."

Thank you LWTCS and mtnwalker2!
I am starting with turbo yeast as I have it and its my first batch. I plan on doing several iterations so I can learn as much as possible.
I have some EC-1118 to use after I use up the turbo yeast (I don't have much of the turbo yeast).
mtnwalker2: Do you have any recommendation for the amount of charcoal to mix with the container of distillate?
