"Oops...I mean WASH....

So my first sugar wash using the Turbo 48 is done bubbling. Am I correct in thinking it needs to rest for a few days now and clear up? Do I just leave the airlock on and let it settle, then siphon out the clear? Confused"

Yep, you have it exactly. the clearer the better. You can speed it ulp with sparkaloid or the 2 part clenser, gut a few extra days does the same if you are not in a rush. I know I get impatient too. Worth waiting for it to clear though."

"Pop the lid and give it a good stir so it can ""off gas"". This will help solids to drop out of suspension.

Otherwise co2 trapped under the trub can continue to more slowly off gas and push sediments into suspension and will result in longer clearing times."

"I can tell you this.
I timed my third batch to be ready on the weekend.
With a non turbo and a touch of nutrients, it was still bubbling very slowly on the Sunday that I had set aside. six days later!! I said, not knowing any better, to heck with waiting, in she goes.
Stuff smelled great! Wanted to drink it as it was but though better of it.
As I the siphoned off the ""milky"" product it would fizz when it hit the filter.
Like pouring beer on a hot sidewalk.
Now that's green.

Well, I ran the still really tight but still the product came out with a sweetness smell that would make cotton candy envious.

Patients and knowledge. Patients and knowledge."

"Twoeightnine what recipe did you run?

Some washes can take longer amount of time to finish based on lots of variables. Temps, nutrients, yeast (amounts).

If you put some more fermenters in service you will be able to keep up with your demand better.

Did you taste (and spit out) the wash ? Was it dry?
Should have been dry like dry wine.
Otherwise,let it run it's course.

Did you make cuts?"

"The recipe I used was a cross between one I got at a brew store and the sugar to water to yeast ratio published on the yeast package.
As far as the nutrients, they came from the brew store and also had instructions and ratios on the back.
I got the mix going as per standard methods, using pure white sugar, yeast (non turbo), and nutrients.
Took it out to the shop, sat it on and wrapped around, it's heating blanket, and set it to low. Blanket temp about 70 degrees.
The first day it just kind of sat there. Figured it was a bust. I had only used turbo yeast before and was used to it getting down to business pretty quick. But I was switching because, I had a couple of fights with respect to keeping the temps down using turbos.
My first turbo spent a couple of days in the bath tub filled with cool water. I also did not like the fact that I pulled over 100ml of fore shots from that batch!! That was at 160 or below! For forty minutes.
Any how..By the next day however the wash was bubbling nice and steady. It just never really quit. I planned 4 day ferment with two days to rest.
As I mentioned it was still working albeit very slowly by run day.

When I ran it I did the standard cuts but, being a rookie I collected in small batches but as long as the temp behaved, the small batches went into the same collector. I was treating it as a precautionary method. Sort of...well...to protect the main collection should the still go awry it wouldn't spoil the whole batch.
As you can see I learned from Mr. Mountain Walker that collecting in small jars allows one to later select the hearts and recycle the rest.

And I can see the advantage of more fermenters, and the time to allow the product to clarify. Clarification would go a long way to getting off to a good start"

"Clean is my mission.
It makes perfect sense to me. Cleaner in, makes cleaner out.
I mean....it's only a still. Not a reflux capasiter!!

Odd thing though. My end product will be infused. I have four plans for my products. pure eth with flavor. Not eth from mashes flavor.

The more I learn the more I want to do. Who got me into this anyhow?"
