"After treating some tails with activated charcoal and then separating the charcoal from the vodka with a coffee filter, I ended up with black vodka, that is vodka with very fine charcoal. How can I separate the vodka from the fine charcoal without redistilling it? Where can a sufficiently fine coffee filter be obtained?

Did you boil your charcoal and pour off the dust before you used it? Are you using a column filter?

"Actually, I didn't use a column filter. I thought I would try a different
process.
I put 1/2 gallon 60% abv, 7 Tbs activated charcoal (from Brewhaus) and dropped
in a stir bar in a 1 gallon glass jar and placed it on a magnetic stirrer for 24
hours. (I also wonder if 7 Tbs is sufficient)

After straining it through a coffee filter I ended up with a black tinge in the
product from fine suspended carbon particles.

I now realize I should have first washed the charcoal by the above process.

I need to find a finer filter than that which a coffee filter provides.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Someone even suggested that a minute amount of carbon is harmless - I could explain it by calling it genuine black russian vodka :)

Was thanked: 15 time(s) in 15 post(s)
It will probable settle out and then you can pull from the top and leave whats in the bottom, but next time boil it and clean it first. And then the coffee filter will work just fine.

If you start washing your charcoal you will pretty much cure your problem. On my column filter I use 3 regular Mr Coffee filters and never have any carbon in the final product. When I used a gallon jar with carbon I just folded a paper towel over so I had a couple of layers of it and then put a coffee filter after that and put a rubber band around the neck of the jar to hold it all together. Never had any carbon come through but I always boil and wash the carbon before use.
