"I have a 6KW/240 volt electric hot water heater element installed in my new 7.5 gallon brewhaus boiler-- it is rigged to be switched from 240 to 120 when i think it is close enough to 178 deg. F.--the 120 line is also variac controlled so i can tweak the output rate.
THE QUESTION is --is 6kw an over kill in any way to start out with?
i see the huge banjo gas rig that swampy uses yet i am still wondering if this 6 KW internal element will have any negative effects.

"I also have the banjo 224,000 btu gas unit. I 0nly use with my keg as it burns a lot of gas and the 10"" burner wastes a lot of propane with the smaller 7.5 gal. keg. I use a regular turkey fryer burner for that.
If mash or wash is as clean as Scotty shows how to do, you will not have any issues heating up the still full bore. the trick then is to control the vapor emmission, which he also has explained. Or at least how to control it, you will have to adjust it for what type of still and wash- mash or wine you are running etc. Each will be different and thats your learning curve.
Someone who does a very simular run to what you are attempting can give you hints if you give enough imfo. for what you are attempting."

"Thanks for the response MW I feel better about it now. MW all my washes are practically see through. The whiskey washes have some color but no residue that can burn. I supose i will have to be sure thay o dont do any washes that require some grain to be left in it while distilling. Im wanting to get it up to temp as quickly as possible and was wondering if the hi wattage at first would cause any problems. i asking about it now because i can not test the boiler on 240 untill i get an outlet installed. This boiler will be done as perfectly as i can set it up before the maiden run-- i still have the other rig. "Never haveing used electric in this hobby, its out of my field.
One thing I have read in the past is that there are several different metals availiable as heating elements, each with different characteristics. Some were not considered good for this.
Its been years since I read that thread so don't remember the details or even where I read it.
Hoopefully some one here will have some imfo. Or else do some google."
