If its a glass top unit you should cause I've read that the boil pot will dance around if it's a small capacity. The diffuser plate stops the direct contact and thats what makes it dance while its on the burner. So no DIRECT contact might be the answer.

I've got the 1500 watt Brewhaus hot plate, I use it with the BH High Capacity unit. Never have used the diffuser plate. I think it may be beneficial if using propane.

I have the 1500 watt BH hotplate and I use the diffuser. Diameter of the heating element is 7.25 inches. Diameter of the bottom of the standard BH kettle is 9 inches. I figure I am heating the entire kettle by using the diffuser. The premium kettle has a bottom diameter of 13 inches.
