Don' know for sure but I've been using the black gasket that comes with the Brewhaus HC. It has a tendancy to stick to the seat and column and sometimes you would think you are going to break something just getting it apart. So I did a run this morning and I put a little Pam no stick stuff that you use in frying pans on the gasket. I haven't taken it apart yet but I hope that keeps it from sticking. I'll let you know tomorrow when I tear it down. Anyone else have that sticking gasket problem? As far as the 200 degree temp rating on the white material goes, I'd like something rated a little higher than that, at least up higher than the boiling point of water.

I have noticed that if the Tri Clamp is tightened too tight the gaskets surely will get stuck." |

Ok everyone, I made the first run using the food grade rubber gasket material, it made it though without any major issues. It did scorch it a bit and it did stick a bit, but came appart pretty easy. I am still going to check into something that has a little higher temp. range just to be on the safe side. I am not sure how many runs I can get by with. How does cork hold up to the heat, steam tends to make different materials brake down, it's not like just staight out heat.

"I'm thinking of aquarium safe silicone to make a permanant seal on my 3.5 gallon stainless stock pot/wanna be still.
My thoughts are to put a decent bead of the sealer on the cover, then place wax paper over the edge of the pot so i can push the cover gently down and hopefully form a proper surface . If this works i'll get some clamps or something to hold it together. What will happen to the wax paper ?????? Maybe ill spray it with pam first.
Any thoughts??????????????????"

Ok, I went back to the place I got the first gasket material and ask them what was the next step up above 200 degs., this is what they reccomended. This is a food grade all silicone material and is good upto 500 degs., and it is very plyable so it should seal down real nice. Then I asked myself, why didn't you get this to begin with Stupid! Anyway, I am going to run a batch Saturday, I will let you know how it works out. Oh, and they said it shouldn't stick either. New Gasket worked great, no sticking and no scorching. End of the Gasket Problem.

This is a huge issue on other forums, with a big no-no to anything other than flour paste or teflon tape. Gasket vendors tell you about temperature tolerance and food grade, but not about reaction to super heated pressurized ethanol, an extremely active solvent. I settled on a cardboard ring with an overlapping wrap of teflon plumbers tape, popular on another forum. Simple to make any size and has held up well so far.
