I have read several accounts about immersion heaters , some are harrowing! I have use the 'Amazing Plastic Still' from Gert Strand and loved it But, The little aquarium heater burned out after only a few runs ,and yes I made sure it was always submerged,. I have also heard that hot water heater elements can explode in the still! I really doubt this, but I guess they could 'pop' ,burn out,if they aren't properly cleaned. What I am really concerned about is, If I run a sugar wash OR a grain mash, am I running a risk that particles ,or even carmalized sugar, will stick to the element causing it to burn out? Presently, I am running a dinky little pot still on a 1000 watt,?, hot plate and would like to improve the efficency ,a bigger still AND a better heat source,. Presently, it takes me about an hour and a half to run one gallon of wash/beer/mash and I running out of patience! Also, dosen't it take a LOT longer to run the same amount of wash through a reflux still as a pot still? When I use Prestige products, I often only have to run it once and then through my 'Brita' water filter to clean it uo nicely. So I wouldn't mind continuing on with my pot still, if it is significantly faster than a reflux type. After all, I'm not really looking for 200proof, just a nice flavorful sipping whiskey to enjoy! Thanks for your replies, Spirit Maker

I have bought 3 heaters from Brewhaus in Canada and they have replaced them twice already each time at no charge as they just stop working for no apparent reason. Gert Strand needs to go back to the drawing board and get a decent product on the market.

Just so that you know, Brewhaus Canada has often purchased 110V heaters elsewhere, so those that have given you problems are not necessarily the product from Gert Strand. We have only ever purchased our 110V heaters through Gert Strand, and have had an extremely low failure rate ,less than 1%,, so I would assume that your problem heaters are quite likely from another source.

The only immersion heaters that I have purchased from Brewhaus in Canada are the modified Eden 425 100W fish tank heaters from Italy that Gert Strand sells.

Rick, I did buy my aquarium type heater from Brewhaus and it did work---for a while. Then it just stopped working. I looked it over carefully and I don't see any indication of a burn out, so I'm really confused. The wiring also appears good. I guess I'll shop elsewhere for a common hotwater tank type heater element and run it on as low a setting as I can get. Sorry, but I am disappointed with a $35.00 ,US, heater that didn't work more than a couple of weeks! th' Drunk

While we have had literally less than a handful of heaters that have needed to be replaced, we have always done so without any problem. I spoke to Gert on this, who in turn spoke with the manufacturer. It turns out that one run had potential problems, so that run of heaters may contain a higher percentage of faulty units. They are doing all that they can do, which is to replace the heaters. Fortunately, it appears that very few of these heaters came to us, as we had stocked up before those got into the system. In any event, the problem was recognized and corrected.
