I've cooked my first batch of sugar-wash and got 150 proof right away. Here is my question, once the temp reaches 80C I can increase cooling water to colomn to cool down or heat up. Or should you decrease heat and use a trickle of cooling? I have the propane cranked up and the cooling water at 3/4's to 7/8's open to hold down temp.

You should get 190%+ on first run even without stripping. Take off the heads at a slow drip."

another question I have. I bought a liter of the rashig rings and put them in column, well it fills it up past the first section of colmn and into the second section...too much?? Thanx for your reply, I appreciate any help

No it's not too much, but copper mesh is really what you want. There are reasons other than surface area that make copper preferable.
On your control question: mntw2 is correct, especially for your final run, otherwise you are pushing to column so hard that you'll never make quality cuts. If you're stripping then you push harder & take off as quick as you want, but still you don't want the kettle boiling so hard that the column is struggling to keep up.

I tried to buy some copper mesh...like scouring pads and they are "copper-coated" which doesn't sound good. Guess I'll have to order some from brewhaus. I'm learning and that is always fun.
