"New here. I have a pro II and am getting about 85% on the first run maintaining heat at 78.5 C. with a bit of a balancing act. Can I get a higher percent? I'm collecting about 400 ML every 15 minutes and would like to slow down the drip rate for more reflux. The manual says you can do that by controlling the cooling flow, but do I raise it above 79C or lower it below 78C to slow things down? Am I on the right track? -heron"

"Strip first. dilute to 40% or so.
Packed column
Enough heat to generate goodly amount of reflux Let reflux to equalize/stack some fractions before take off. Draw heads off slow re-equalize Collect at 2-3 drips per second or so.
More cooling= slower collection rate=higher ABV.
Heat counts too. More heat can mean less abv with a pot still......But with forced refluxing, you need to generate goodly amounts of vapor to allow the reflux to do its job......with out flooding your column......
Just need to find that happy spot.
Practice practice practice"

"Thanks, I slowed the collection rate down to 300ML every 30 minutes and got 92% ABV. It has a kind of sweet, slight acetone scent. I'd like to get 95% and an odorless product. I'm using copper mesh in the column. It has been suggested that I switch to ceramic rings to raise ABV??
Also, should I use activated carbon for smell/taste? If so, is there a recommended filter system?
Or should I just do a triple distillation?
Thanks to the masters for their help!
