Hi there,

Cutting a hole through both lids won't lessen the insulation properties of the top as the area effected will be less than 1cm^2 compared to the area of the lid which will be ~= 1500cm^2. Especially considering that the hole through the lids will be blocked by the cord.

If you run the cord through the draft hole you will block up substantially more of it's area but you could just use a bigger hole to make up for this.

Your choice really. I'd put it through the draft hole as the heater will prob fit through this and not require you to take the plug off.

Good luck and I hope it works for you.

If you want good quality spirits, and are willing to invest a little more time and effort, make a reflux still.
