Now stainless is cheaper than copper. Older stills were copper cause it was easy to work. Stainless is a bitch to work with (said the man who is getting ready to try welding the same fitting for the 3rd time)

Was thanked: 15 time(s) in 15 post(s)
if its not too late try brazin it with a brass rod. That worked for me - good flux ( for stainless ) and acetalyn torch is a must. I brazed copper to stainless with it - no leaks so..........

lots of us using stainless stills-- we just add some copper mesh or scrubbers. jus a couple for pot stills and we pack the whole column for refracting types. This is old information="

Hey Scotty, when you put the copper mesh in the column, do you pack a bunch of it in there tightly and fill it. Or just put a small amount in loosely. I'm attempting a sweet feed in a 3" column in pot still mode?

Then i asume you dont want a lot of copper in the column, just enough to reduce sulphur.
I have a 1 foot extension for my pot mode tower- i roll the copper mesh right off the roll loosely and do not put more than one(( im guessing)) 6 or so inch roll. Whatever the length of the roll of new copper mesh is."

I have heard of people boiling in aluminum as well.

My question is if one can use steel for the boiling pot? A standard propane tank has an excellent shape... Cheaper then ss tanks.
