Scott:

how I rejuvenate carbon. I've been using the same carbon for almost two years. I started with 3 units and lose a small amount each time. I rinse my carbon with distilled water, drain then bake at 450-500 degrees for 3-6 hours. Some times the smell is intense, some times not so bad. After fully dried, cooked to perfection I use distilled water in my pressure cooker to 're-activate' Pressure cooking it for 10-20 minuets at 20 lbs.

If the steam coming off is odorless then the stuff seems to be as good as it gets. I leave the carbon immersed in water ,distilled, until the next time it's needed. This way I usually have enough to fill my filter tube twice. I use distilled water ,Steam distilled, not filter distilled, because I found something precipitated out when I used the nasty stuff we call water in Lewisville or the reverse osmosis distilled water sold at Wally world..

Hope this helped.

Hey I Have been in the marine fish tank hobby ,the hardest of all fish to keep, for over two years and the freash water hobby for over 10. I know this has nothing to do with brewing but it deals with water chemisty and the use of carbon. Every thing i have read has said and proven that carbon cannot be 're activated.' it is a myth. you must use freash each time. Unless the stuff that comes off your still isent very durty. carbon uses its small pores to trap particles. these pores are VERY small. so small that you cannot rinse tham clean. but if the stuff that you run through isent durty it wont take up very many off the pores. so you may be able to use it several times. general rule of thum is If it smells get rid off it.

Difference between what you are filtering out . Most of what comes out of alchol filtering is still very volatile. It can be easily removed from the carbon by heating. The refuse you are removing from a fish tank could be non volatile and thus heating it will not remove it.
