"Awesome site.....just wished I found it sooner.

I am just finishing my still and after reading threads on this site I am not nearly as confident in the design.

I have a 5 gallon ss pot a 4 inch copper colum 24 inches tall necking down to 1/2 copper. The 1/2 is 20 feet long coiled inside an 8 inch pipe that water will flow freely around.

I had fun buliding it and if it doesn't work well it will look like it should.BigGrin

I had intened to pack with copper, but I see no mention of any towers this big.

My first question what can I expect out of my design?

How much packing should I use?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.:)"

"Based on your description, sounds like a nice potstill with plenty of knock down power for your product condenser.

Double distilling will make a nice smooth product.........with good cuts that is."

Sweet feed makes for a simple mash. Try staying with one type of mash till you get the feel for your still. This makes for one less variable while your learning.

"Thanks so much for that tip on the sweet feed. Was thinking that might be a good one. Some chums who I was chatting with on another forum mentioned it had urea in it. I did not think it would make it through the distillation process and this was confirmed by the Brewmeister at the feed store/home brew combo place where I shop. He says he do not know where it goes but it dont come out in the collection jar..lol. I am a total newbie except I can make some good cowboy wine and have dabbled in beer a bit. Sure nice to find this place. I have the plumber at work on a still as we speak. Building the valved model from moonshine-still.com. Anybody know anything about that one? Any tips etc. Thanks. I am also threatening to buy a store bought model from the brew haus folks just to be on the safe side. I am struggling between the 8 gallon milk bucket model and the keg set up. Anybody have some thoughts?
