I just ordered a pro series 2 high capacity unit from Brewhaus. I have made mine own wine 2 or 3 months ago but with a kit, I didn't make my own mash. So I have the equipment of a beginning wine maker, and know enough to be dumb. I'm a complete newbie here, and before anyone yells at me, I've read a lot ,most, of the newbie posts and haven't seen this asked before. So where would people recommend I start? What would be the first ,simple, thing you would make? Also, does anyone know of any other distilling forums anywhere?

The only dumb question is the one you don't ask! The simplest thing you can make would be a batch of sugar wash using turbo yeast. The directions are simple and the results are very good. You already have the container so you only need sugar, water, turbo yeast. Some people don't use anything else.

Hans - thank you! Some more questions for you: The sugar wash - this would make... moonshine? After being run through the reflux still I bought would be 180-190 Proof ,95% alchohol,? I had 'moonshine' for the first time two weeks ago ,a friend had it but he didn't make it,. It was very smooth, smoother than any commercial spirit I've ever had ,whiskey, vodka, etc.., and it burned a lot less. Is this characteristic of the sugar wash you recommend?

Moonshine is a name for any home distilled product but seems to be connected with corn whiskey. White lightning or Mountain Dew are other names that you might hear. When you distill the sugar wash you will get neutral flavor ethanol that you can then flavor however you please. Some buy the commercial essences that are available. Others make their own flavorings. This is one of the fun aspects of distilling as a hobby. The sugar wash has very few congeners that give off flavors to the distillate. Your product should have the clean taste you experienced. Please don't try and drink it at the high proof. Dilute it first. You can use it as vodka. The recipe section on this forum or the recipes at www.homedistiller.org can give you some ideas. With the essences you should be able to make just about any type of liquor you could possibly want.

Thank you Hans. I appreciate your response. I'm sure as I'm going through the process I'll have more questions. I am going to try the sugar wash first as you explain. Lots more reading to do!

To be sure I did things correctly, I made a few liters of distilled water first. This ,I imagined, helped clean out the still and gave me an idea of how to handle the whold setup. I use the distilled water to dilute the spirits.
