The PSII High Capacity would be a great way to start since no upgrade is necessary and it's as simple as it gets. The copper mesh, depending on what you are doing, with it running in pot still mode I put in 2 plugs, in reflux you pack it all the way to the top. After a run I rinse them off and throw them in the dishwasher. I've been using the same mesh for a couple of years now.

Speaking of paking the 3 inch tower. Does anyone have a measurement of how long a strip of copper mesh is used so when it is rolled up. it fits the diameter correctly.:)

The manual calls for 10 - 11 feet. I cut mine at exactly 10 feet and they were snug enough to stay in place. I had to re-roll a few plugs when I rolled them too tight.

Yeah, they change color but that doesn't hurt their ability to capture the sulfides."

Well Scotty, honestly the consensus among most experienced home distillers is that in fact the mesh in a packed columns needs nothing more than a hot water back wash with plain water down the column after a run. Then just hang the column with the packing inside and allow it to drain and dry.

Absent puking there is no benefit from removing the packing and thoroughly cleaning it after every single run, least that's the consensus.

As analytical as this hobby is it is very easy to over Analyze some aspects of it.:)"

Fellas, I too am of the leave it and just back rinse the tower mentallity. I have removed them but just got lazy and found no real diff in the finished product. I put 3 mesh packs in my tower about 6-7 inches apart -- in my mind it kinda acts likes plates if you can imagine it. After awhile I will remove them and squeeze them and squish them around under the hose just to knock off the grit but thats just me.

I also just rinse with hot water, right after stilling so nothing gets a chance to get happy on it.
