"Hello everyone,
I am new to running a still and I am looking at purchasing an Essential Extractor HC. I currently have a PID setup for my sparge water and for use with my electric smoker.
I am wondering if anyone has used a pid to control a water heater element? I am thinking I could drill a hole for the thermocoupler in the bottom of my keg/kettle. Than I could just set the pid to a certain temp and be ready to go. The thermocoupler usually stays within a degree so I believe that should be accurate enough (especially if I insulate the keg/kettle.)
Does anyone have a setup like this.
Also as a side note how does the essentially extract HC compare to a boka for a 3"" column?"

"I have a pid that controlls a DPDT mechanical relay. The relay has 240 and 120 volts coming into it. The N/C contacts are 120 volts and the n/o contacts are 240 volts. The contactor coil is 240 volts. When i turn the rig on the contacter is activated and applys 240 volts to the heater element. As son as the pid senses (K sensor) 110 degrees F. at the base of the tower it removes the applied voltage to the contactor which causes it to drop back to the N/C 120 volt position. I have a variac in series with the 120 volt line. The PID alarm relay controls a SSR that activates/de activates the contactor As soon as i get a few other projects caught up i hope to use a couple of other pids to control 3 way solenoid valves that will direct the output of the still to diferent containers using still head temperature as a guide. I had the pid for 2 years before i got enough nerve to use it. LOL THE HEAT ELEMENT IS A 5kw 220 VOLT ELEMENT. MY BOILER IS 8 GALLON BREW HAUS. Naturally the mechanical contactor can easily be replaced with SSRs but because i am not using gas to heat the rig , i am not concened with arching and it would take about 4 SSRs to replace the mechanical relay. I'M TOO LAZY TO DO ALL THE REMOUNTING AND RE WIRING.  "
