Okay, I've made a couple of runs in reflux mode with my Essential Extractor Pro Series II using a 14% abv wash. I use propane for my heat source. First off, I notice that I don't begin producing distillate until I have a head temp(top of column) of 176 degrees F...this produces about a drop every second to second and a half. If I decrease cooling flow to my column and allow the head temp to rise to about 178 degrees F, I get a couple of drops of distillate per second. In both cases, I'm getting 180 proof, 90% abv distillate. What can I do to increase my purity to 95% or 190 proof? I've varied my head temp from 176 to 182 degrees F and my alcohol remains 90% abv or 180 proof. Any thoughts on this is greatly appreciated.

"Independant flow to your reflux condenser. Allow a good hour to fully equalize before drawing off product. Don't be afraid of boiler input. Remember,,more heat means more vapor. And more vapor means more reflux. And more reflux means more purity. And more purity means more good times. And more good times means...............sorry got transfixed. Be mindful not to flood your column however. Pay attention."

"...so, first off, my column or reflux cooling should be independent of my condenser cooling? (2)..""allow a good hour to equalize before drawing off product""...so after I bring my boiler up to temp, which at the heat/burner setting I've been using has been taking about an hour exactly for 5 gallons of wash, by equalize, should I adjust my heat input or my column cooling rate to allow for this equalization? (3)..""don't be afraid of boiler input""...I have been cooking on what I would consider low heat...I use the Blichman Engineering burner. I have been trying to make all my adjustments with column cooling adjustments...I guess what you're telling me is my reflux rate? needs to increase? Thanks LWTCS for the info, I'm a beginner, so I'm still finetuning. I think I've paid a lot of attention to my column/condenser cooling rate, but I've tried to set my propane regulator and not adjust it during the distillation...sounds like I may need to increase my heat input so as to increase the amount of vapor produced thereby increasing my reflux rate?...did I word that correctly? Thanks again!"

Also a wash is gonna be fiddly compared to a 40% boiler charge
