"Hey amigos, I am really glad i found this forum. i have read a couple of books, the Alasken Bootleggers bible probably the best so far, but the info i have read here is fantastic. I have been around a couple of ""fuel"" making machines but really want to get one of my own. i was going to make one, and i still might, but i have some questions before i jump in. What heat source do you all recommend. I already have a propane burner i use for my turkey fryer that i was going to use, but i see a lot of people use a hot plate. I also have natural gas piped to my outside area that i could hook up to. i would like to do 5 gallon washes minimum.
As far as a machine, I see that some of the devices have the capability to transfer from a pot to a reflux. I like the vodka but I am trulely a whisky man. any recommendations from the voices of experience? Thanks, flipskid."

Hola Brochacho! Welcome. I use a propane burner similar to yours and it seems to be pretty easy to regulate the heat if you pay attention. Everyone has there own preference, its just what you like and are comfortable with. The particular columns that you are talking about are available from brewhaus.com, its called the pro series II extractor, they also offer a high capacity model.

Thanks boys. i cant wait to get one of these for my own. Do all of you use a premade unit or have some of you made your own? I was thinking of getting a 7 gallon sauce pot and welding a salad bowl on top for a dome then running copper for the column amd making my own condenser out of copper. I would have tofigure out how to seal the uit also and still have some type of blow off mechanism. the only thing i havent figured out is how to put the temp gauge on and how to change from reflux to pot without buiding a second top. Also how does the packing material stay in the column? I figure i could buid a nice one for around 150 max, but i dont know how long the pot would last as compared to one of the manufactured units. J

Either propane or natural gas(cheaper) will be fine. My 5 gallon "boiler" feeds into a 1 gallon glass jar "thumper" then into 20 feet of "worm" emersed in large bucket with circulating spring water. Pot stil best for whiskey and rum.

You probably know that thumper provides a second distillation for "free". I stop saving output for consumption when it gets below 50% because do not like smell or taste and use the "tails" to "prime" 1 gal. thumper on next run (3-pints diluted to 35%). Later, the saved output is diluted to 55% and aged with oak cuttings (see "homemade oak chips"). Glad to send you photos if desired but not sure if can do on forum.

Brewhaus has a 15 gallon pot available that has a big enough opening to get in and clean it out. Their towers are the best.
