Nothing better than jumping right in there and getting your feet wet. It does seem a little overwhelming when you first start out but pretty soon everything will just fall into place and then you can start experimenting with different results in mind.

"thanks for the replys. i am putting together a pot still using a 15.5 gal keg. i have not decided on a cap yet. mabey a short pipe with a large cap. i have not decided yet. i have everything else including a guy who can weld stainless steel, so i am good there too. The only thing i am not sure about is using electric instead of wood or gas. My uncle used wood since it was almost free. that was one of my jobs as a kid, ""pack wood"" pack this and pack that :) i used to help my uncle when i was a teen up until my mid twentys. he had a 55 gallon pot with a large cap. even though i am in my mid 50s i think i can still make a small batch. however all of the receipes i have are for 100 gallons of mash. there seems to be plenty of those here though for a smaller batch. as the crow flys, the old timers all had their theroy on what made the best tasting brew. as i read more and more i have decided that for the most part, its going to taste the same in a pot still so matter what. I have a lot of reading to do on the whole electric verses gas issue."

But as soon as it does, it seems like I stumble over an other interesting rock that needs turning over. :) This distilling rabbit hole seems to go awfully deep! The good part is that you can go one step at a time and still see some results. I suppose part of the fun is discovering something you didn't even know existed ... then learning by ""getting your feet wet."" i just relized that my uncle never actully measured anything. bubble test and taste. I gota wonder what proof he was really making.
