How often if ever do you clean a still. Not just the pot but the whole thing. Do you take it apart and clean or just run water thought like a striping run. Do you use a soap? If someone would be so kind as to help this old man out and teach an old dog a new trick. Thanks to all for some great reading.

On the Brewhaus Refluxers as far as I know..after the initial water/vinegar cleaning run and the sacrificial alcohol run...the column needs to be back flushed with water and allowed to dry after each use. Occasionally the copper plugs need to be removed and cleaned. Not sure there is any firm rule of thumb on that one. Maybe when it starts tasting funky or something. Believe Bayou recommends they be soaked in a citric acid solution..rinsed and dried before being put back in the column. One chum said he cleaned his up good with a boiling vinegar and water bath followed by rinsing and drip dry. Would not do any soap except for the boiler. Hope this helps till you get some better advice.

"Hey 24..just drug out my faithful BH Owners Manuel and it dont say a word about even taking the copper out of the column at all. It do recommend the back flush after each use. Maybe cleaning the copper plugs is optional. I did hear one guy say he ran his through the dishwasher cycle.

Well not sure I go quite that far:) There is a bunch of world class hooch makers out in the world who claim that packing needs cleaning occasionally. After every several runs etc. I wouldnt swing totally into the lazy boy mode without letting some of them chirp in on the topic..lol. Dang aint it like a ten year old kid waiting for Christmas..to wait for that fancy hoochmaker to arrive? Think you will find it a real fun hobby. Can turn an introvert into having a bunch of pals and palettes quickly. Sorta like the old beer keg set up in the living room. Make you have friends you never met before. lol.
