After distilling, my final product was crystal clear. When I diluted it with distilled water it turned cloudy. I ran it through a Brita filter, which removed whatever smell remained, but it was still cloudy. I added essences and the stuff tasted fine. What can I do to retain the clarity?

I am not sure what is going on. I would love to hear comments from the ones who has been brewing for some time. I am interested to see in case I encounter the same problem. I have read about inpurities in the water and distilled spirits but I am not sure if that is what is going on.

In virtually every case, this is caused by minerals in the water that are not soluble in alcohol. When they are introduced to the alcohol, they come out of solution and cause the product to appear cloudy. While it is easiest to simply use a de-mineralized water, or a distilled water that does not have minerals added back to give the water a bit of life ,some distilled drinking water has this,, a very fine filtration will filter this out. This is generally done with a compressed fiber filter, such as a wine filter.

Thanks Rick. I ran the WATER through the Brita before using it and the second batch turned out crystal clear! What is interesting is that in the first batch I ran the product And the water together through the Brita and it was cloudy. Apparently if done separately, all is well.

From what I have read you have to add the alcohol to the water not the water to alcohol.

Beats the hell out of me, it all tastes the same afterword!!! If you temp.'s are the same, let sit a while, which I do, like I put oak chips in the finish product and then let it set a week or so before making my finish product and use distilled or spring water, I have never experienc ed cloudness in the product, might be just the way I hold my lips?????????
