I had every intention of watching the first keeper run from start to finish but I had an emergency which took me away after having the burner running for 1/2 hour (I know now I should have turned to heat off). By the time I could get back, the temp was at 195, vapor was pouring out of the condenser. I immediately turned water on to the condenser and turned to heat as low as I could. I couldn't get the temp back below 186 so I just kept collecting until temp was 205. I had 12 pint jars 1/2 full. Testing showed between 50-65 %. My question is should I re-run the whole thing again, re-run what I collected after diluting to 40%, or keep what I have for my eventual reflux run? Or???? Thanks.

I have a 3 ft discharge line leading away from the burner and I have a fan pulling air from inside out. Going be a lot more careful in the future that's for sure."

Bad Boy..them old codgers on the other live chat site come and beat you up for running off while trying to conduct bizness...or at least they would nag. Give it the sniff test after airing out for a week or so. If it dont smell like fingernail polish remover or wet hound dawgs..or damp cardboard boxes it should be drinkable. If in doubt make Apple Pie out of it and give it to the neighbors or the little girly o's at the nudie bars. They love apple pie. Best of fortunes sir. Dont run off and leave your bizness next time. That could get a person executed in the military in war time..if we was not so politcal correct nowadays. It prob be Ok come to thunk on it.

Lesson Learned though I'm sure I'm not the first person to screw up like this. Maybe the first one to admit it. Thanks for the advice. I have it airing out now. I did notice the mid run 1/2 pints smelled like flavored vodka so am hopeful some can be salvaged. May dilute some tomorrow and do the ""taste test"" though do wish I had a nasty neighbor I could test it on LOL. Regards."

If you have the reflux tower then just clean it up with that.

Ok Brudder we feels your pain here. Sound like you done good. Worst a person can get from drinking the whole run is a bad old hangover seems like is the prevalent theory. Ball parking should be fine. Coming into this hobby cold but not cold sober by any means..will say a person can make a bunch of friends real quick. It one step up from the refrigerated keg box. Very effective in the bloomer shucking contests from whut a person might notice. Salud!!

"Hey CC, lucky you didn't blow up the building. Since you were at 195 I would suggest you either dilute to 40% and rerun in reflux or save it back to run with your next batch. You probably have a lot of heads and tails mixed in the whole batch. Some lessons have to be learned the hard way, could have been worse.

Good advice from you guys. I like Ratflinger's suggestion about refluxing it but my plan was to do 3 stripping runs then one reflux run from the combined stripping (after diluting to 40%). I'm going to go thru the cuts to see if I can determine the heads, hearts and tails just for the experience. Then I'll do what you suggest and rerun with my next stripping run. Thanks all for you input."

"Sounds like you have some good safety precautions in place. Think I would move the fire extinguisher into the hooching shed. Might save some critical steps in a crisis. Yeppers..if you gotta go just shut ir down and come back later. Dont hurt a thing other than you got to toss the fores again..depending on where you are in the run when it goes kaput. Done that to me one time on a plugged column. Could tell the boiler was getting hot enough to blow and the top was still not hot enough to do bizness. I just shut it down and come back tomorrow..redid the packing and never missed a beat.

Hey CC, best to have a fire extinguisher in the shed as water will spread the fire before it diluts the alcohol enough to put the flames out. Other than that your plans sound good. Turning the water on at a 140 won't hurt anything, unless you use a static water source then it heats your water up quicker.

One concern I did have during the clean out and sacrificial run was how hot the water in my storage tank got. Then I had a 30 gallon garbage can that I was continually adding cold water to and finally adding frozen milk jugs that I had stored. I have since added the 2 55 gallon steel drums that I can swap when the water temp heats up. I did notice that during the pot still run, the water didn't vary in temp that much so maybe the 2 barrels full of water will keep the condenser cool by swapping. I'll be taking one of the fire extinguishes to the shed from now on."

"Sounds like you have the water situation under control. I use a 150 quart ice chest and 10 frozen 1 gal. milk jugs. That gets me through a reflux run, barely, and a pot run easily.

From the 12 1/2 pints from the run, I combined #4, 5, 6 to one pint jar, squeezed one lemon into it, and put the lemon rinds into the jar as well. Been shaking it all day. After letting it "age" for about 24 hours, I took a "shot". It tasted just like a Margarita with a double shot of tequila. So I took another......and may have one more in a couple of minutes. I'm really going to enjoy my new hobby. Regards to all.

Congrats on a good run and a tasty drink. I use mason or ball pint jars, put a coffee filter over the top and screw the lid ring on and let them sit for a couple days to let it mellow out and it seems to improve the flavor. Just something to try and see if it works for you.
