I originally wanted to use rasching rings as my packing. However, after doing some adjustments to my column in attaching it to the beer keg, I think I'm gonna have to use copper packing. BH has the copper packing I'm looking for but need to know 1) is the price for each roll? 2) how many rolls would I need for my column which is 2" copper and 30" tall. OR how can I attach the brass screen to the bottom of the column when attaching it to the keg to keep the rings contained? I'll be attaching the column with a SS flange which is held in place with the tri-clamp.

I was wondering on that ring deal myself.

Only way I could envision getting them in there is to pour them backwards into the column..screwing on the SS gizmo (which has a screen right?) then dumping it right side up and hoping none got stuck in the needle valve assembly.

Then it just have to be unscrewed and need more teflon tape to hook it back up after they are dumped. Think it was a good plan to get that idear outta the way..lol.

I vote for one roll be plenty. BH sells it way cheaper than my highway robber home brew shoppe. Copper still shouldnt take much. Couple of plugs maybe. Should make it fine with one roll.

Not to get cornfusing but you can also use pure copper pot scrubbers..not copper coated.. if you can find some. Somebody gave a brand name of some which is commonly available but I forget the brand right now.

Keeps us posted.

dasorge....rashig rings will work but arent essential for good likker. But if you must have em one way to keep em in your tower is....remove your tower and turn it over, pour in the rings then stuff a copper mesh plug in there that will hold em in --- can you see it yet?????? I think the copper is better but try it and see if you get a really different result from each. Something else to play with I guess..........BigGrin

The price is good-- 1 roll will easily fill a 2 inch tower. I drilled a hole in the tower base and installed a stainless bolt.

"I was looking at my creation last night and got that proud feeling -- the one when you have your first child!

Bigwheel -- the connection pieces I got don't have a screen on the ss gizzmo Sad I am able to connect the column to the ss adaptor by screwing them together.

Heeler -- I had thought of packing some copper in the bottom of the tower as well. My fear is that the packing may be too tight for the vapors to pass through. It would have to be a tight packing to hold the weight of the rings.

I'm in no rush as I will be doing the cleaning and polishing this week and the first batch I try won't need packing anyway (in the pot mode). Need to get a couple of assessories before doing the good stuff anyway.

I will check the local stores for copper scrubbers. Would SS scrubbers work instead of copper?"

SS should work..copper be best. It normally not a good plan to have dissimilar metals in contact. Under the right scenario its called a battery. Galvanic response or something like that. Supposed to translate into being prone to tarnish and corrode easily. Copper on copper sounds good. Course you have the same issue where the copper fits on the SS base..but least you could undo that if you wanted to give it a break from the action for a while. Cant believe the gizmo dont have the screen built into it. Where did you get that bizness? You may want to snag a 2" SS gasket/screen combo. Dont see any at BH but did spot one over here. That would help on the issues involved I think. Least keep the scrubbers or mesh or rings out of the boiler.

"If the still tower is stainless and stuffed with coppeer, do we get galvanic action?????OhMyGod
Or is electric current necessary. or perhaps a specific type of liquid between the metals???"

Well what is good for the goose bound to be good for the gander too.

Maybe that is why my copper mesh stuff likes to turn black sometimes.

Lets see now...I sleep through most of physics 101 but did spend a lot of quality time in old timey filling stations.

Guessing it must take some kinda liquid to set up the current flow. Right? We used sulfuric acid.

Apparently hot water can work too. Least the way the copper connectors eat up the galvanized nipples on my electric water heater it seems to work.

Fact is I used to go to the trouble to buy brass nipples and solved the problemo.

Latest one came with built in nipples. Who woulda thunk of that? Must be some kinda plot by the Guv'ment.

I looked for a ss screen and the ones I found here and other places are not recommended for use with a keg. Just my luck! Oh well.

Dang...sorry to hear that. I thought that was why they got invented for some reason. Dont never listen to me. Now you artfully dodging the sixty four dollar question where as to where a person might acquire a peece o sheet SS gizmo which do not have a built in screen? Thanks. I will know not to chop there.

guess I'll be getting some copper packing. The other idea I will be playing with is to get some brass screening, attach it to the bottom of the column using an adjustable clamp from the outside to keep the rings contained. Will need to be careful as the rising vapors could leak out at the connection. wonder if a wider sized rubber ring instead of the traditional O ring will work?

I know this is an old thread but if anyone else needs this answer...get a piece of stiff copper wireabout 1/4 inch longer than the inside diameter of the column. Put in the scrubbers and then push the wire in sideways. The tension will hold it in and that way you can have the rings above the scrubber.

I did that once but liked using all scrubbers better.

Hey welcome over here too. Was wondering what taking you so long to get home..lol. This is the place where somebody was trying to part with an 8 gallon milk bucket to some needy family. Save you have to cut into one of them nasty old beer kegs..be just the right size for your column etc. Thanks for the tip on the wire.

Yeah, I'd kinda forgotten about this one. I guess I'll bite the bullet and get one of those big ass milk cans! I'll call Mr Brewhaus and see what he says about it running better.

Old thread but I tried a new method for keeping the raschig rings in my column. I actually just went to Bed,Bath, and Beyond and bought a small stainless steel strainer about 3 inches in diameter. I removed the stainless mesh from the unit and discarded the frame and handle. I was left with a cone shaped screen and I inserted it into the bottom of my column with the cone pointing up into the column and pushed it in until it got past my stainless triclamp fitting that I soldered onto my column. Once it was past the "lip" of the fitting it couldn't get back out without some work to remove it so I just pulled my rubber gum bung in the top of the tower and leaned the tower away from the condenser side to keep the rings from getting in there and filled the tower with rings shaking and taping with my hand to get them really packed in there. If a couple of rings go down into the condenser it is ok.... they rolled right on out after I turned it upright.
