"I have an 8 gal still and a 1500w hotplate that i will use. My mash is ready to run. I know I add my wash to the still and bring the heat up slowly; my question is this ""Do i bring my heat up slowly until i reach, say 175-180 deg F and hold it at that temp until I complete my run?
I guess I am concerned about running it too low and getting methanol so should i stay around 175-180? What happens if the temp reaches 190? Is the alcohol still good then? could i run from 175-190 and keep it between those temps and be safe?
Sorry for the questions, this will be actually my 2nd run (first run didnt turn out) so want to try and find if my suggestions above will work.
Thanks for any comments and any suggestions for this newby! Looking forward to getting into this new hobby!!"

Abear I am fairly new too but you are only gonna get the amount of methonal that is in it........just bring it up slowly.....not so slow you go to sleep at around 145-147 your gonna start getting some nasty stuff.....trash it.....your temp will slowly start to rise on its own as you get rid of the junk.......at around 172 to 180 you will notice you temp hoover their for some time this is good sipping hooch.......I have ran mine to 194 before my tails started getting cloudy.....I catch all of these up to about 200 then I pour these back in the next pot.......thats just me........my first batch put out some pretty good stuff........good luck!!!!!!!

Do i hold the temp at a constant temperature or keep it rising slowly? Or hold the temp at 180 for a while and then bring it up slowly after that? Sorry for the stupid questions.... I just dont know whether to try and keep at a constant temp or keep it rising slowly? I know temps are controversial but what temp would be too high?

Do you have a reflux still or a pot still? On my pot still, once I get to 175-180°F, I start getting output. The temperature will slowly rise as the alcohol is vaporized from the boiler and goes into the condenser. I think something in physics says the temperature of the wash cannot increase until the alcohol is driven from the liquid.

I am using a 850w hotplate I just turn it on high until I can feel the temp change half way up my column(its about 2') once I feel the temp change I drop the heat to med.......my settings are High....Med........low Then I set back and cheat and start sipping.......

"i have a reflux still. Sounds good and thanks for the advice. So what i gather from this is to bring the heat up and adjust the heat until i get the output that i want.... a pencil lead stream (or somewhere around there). Don't worry too much about temp as long as i am getting some output. Throw the heads and recycle the tails in the next batch..... does this sound about right?
I will try and hold the temp around 176 and if it rises some (which it will i am sure), that is ok..... is this correct as well?
I have read a book but i gain so much more info from chatting and learning from people on this forum."

I know I was shit in and shit out, but heres the quiz????????? What the hell do I do with all this shit?????????? I am running a 3 gal pot still, should I throw it all back in with the next run I make,? and if so what can I expect? You all never ran outa hooch huh???????? If enough of the tails build up in succeeding runs, you might have a problem. Although I don't know exactly what that problem would be. Just guessing.
