I have a fractioning still like the one described in 'Making Pure Corn Whiskey'. Still is located in barn so that coolin water will fall over into the cows waterin bucket. Corn distilling worked great this summer but now I seem to be stuck in heads. Packing has been removed from the still but has not helped... still stuck. With more mash soon ready just wanted to know if insulating the cross tube would help. I was thinking the outside temps maybe cooling the vapors to fast. Am I on the right track. Thanks! Bringing it inside is not an option...if I like being married!

Insulating the column is always a must in order to get the column to equlibrium. If the outside air is hitting the column then the column will not be able to reach temp for a very extended period of time. I would insulate everything that I could and then run again. I understand the being married part. Remember they have to have something to bitch about.

When I first started my unit was in the barn also and everytime I opened the door the temp dropped to 60-68 and it took an hour to get it back up, even messing with the heat it was a touchie thing to do. I insulated the column and that helped the process emencely, but cold air is our enemy during the distilliation process. My advise is to get it as draft free as possible and insulate your column. As for the marriage thing, just remember, we men screw up all the time and women just live to forgive us lower species!!!!!!!!!! Jimbull
