"I compared the final ABV of 2 striping runs to the final spirit run and am confused with the results. The 2 striping runs produced 111.23 oz of alcohol (ounces in each jar times ABV). After testing the output of the reflux run I produced just 70.83 oz using the same math multiplying the ABV by the number of ounces from each container. What happened to the other 40.40 oz? Did I stop the spirit run too soon? Is there alcohol left in the backset? Or maybe I collected too much tails from the striping runs?

Striping run produced 219.5 ounces of liquid yielding 111.23 ounces alcohol.
Spirit run produced 92 ounces of liquid yielding 70.83 ounces of alcohol.

Again multiplying ounces by the ABV.

Thoughts????

Regards to all."

"Hey CC, you may well have left some in the bucket. I don't know what your proof was when you stopped your run, I usually stop mine between 60 and 70
proof. Also I always get less from a reflux than pot but at a much higher concentration.
Matter can neither be created nor destroyed, only transformed.

I don't think I counted the foreshots I tossed which were included in the striping runs. Have to keep better notes on the next run. Spirits have been aging a couple of days now and am anxious to put my nose and taste buds to the product. Also kept the backset from the spirit run so may combine that will future runs to squeeze out anything I missed. BTW any suggestions on how much to cut the stuff I keep? Was thinking of going for around 40 proof as that's what the vodka I buy in liquor store is.

Kind Regards to all."

Maybe make it a tad higher than you're shooting for as it may drop a few points after a few weeks ... and it's real easy to add a little ice to your glass to bring it down ... it's a lot harder to bring it back up.BigGrin

"CC did you mean 40% because most vodkas I see are 80 proof. Here's a site on HD for calcs on dilutions. Also other calcs are on that site you may be interested in.

Yes, meant to say 80 proof.

I have been to that site and grabbed the formula for determining the dilution amount and have it in a spreadsheet.

Regards to all."
