"I tried to use the mix it with the hooch and stir method but i forgot to wash the carbon first. What a mess.
That turned me off completely for a while but now that health issues are mostly resolved, i'm going to do regular sugar washes again.
My method of controlling off flavors is to ferment as slow as possible and also to distill very slowly.
I'm wondering if anyone would like to start a discussionon or just explain the methods they use and the results they feel they get from carbon filtering.
Even if you think its a waste of time.:)"

Hi Scotty, Glad to here your feeling better. I have'nt tried carbon filtering yet but have looked into it. The stainless rig that BH sells is a little prohibitive for my pocket book so I'm trying to figure out how to build one for less. What system are you useing?
How much liquid did you filter and how long did it take you?

I'm in process of ordering the BH unit- My only experience with carbon was a disaster. It looked like licorise vodka. I never got the carbon dust out of it. So what am i using Hope that i will have better luck with the BH unit. "The things that come to my mind is the carbon preparation. I believe there is an e book by strand that describes it quite well. (( just know i dont take stock in anything that strand pushes.)) Then after the carbon is in the tube, it must be wet to work. Sooo i think we have to measure how much water will drain out before we get to the filtered alcohol. Also if i remember correctly, a very slow drip rate is required in order for the carbon to filter properly. "If stainless is too pricey try pvc. Since your not gonna run 180 proof through it pvc will be fine. I used one of these for quite awhile. I cut my hooch to 120-130 and after airing for a day or so then I imployed the filter. So now your gonna say well I dont want to cut my hooch......but if you research carbon you'll find that high proof will destroy the carbon and hence will not absorb the compounds we are trying to remove.
I used coconut carbon and it worked great until I learned to make - Good Clean Whiskey-- ( see what I did there???) I used 2 inch pvc and put a 6""x2"" reducer on it, then capped the bottom and drilled a 1/4"" hole in that cap for the drain. I also put a cotton ball in the cap and put it back on the tube. Then pour the carbon down the tube. I filled the whole tube.
My tube was 30"" in length and the reducer is like a funnel to pour your likker into. You'll have to make a stand for it but just use your imagination. Make sure you clean your carbon by boiling to remove all the dust and to sterilize. Good lick and hope this gives you some ideas to work with."

Thanks Heeler for the ideas. I thinks I just might try the PVC route. I take it the cotton in the bottom cap is to catch any errant carbon dust, is that right? Also how much carbon is needed for that set up?

Here's a link on how to bild a cheap filter apparatus I stumbled on last year. I haven't tried it yet as I usually try to use toasted wood chips for filtration. Looks like a good method though."
