"I keep thinking I need to check my UJSM PH. I'm currently running gen 4. I have a soil PH meter and strips that I use for a hot tub. I'm sure one will suffice, I just don't know what a good reading for a wash should be and when should you take the reading?

Great question. Hope somebody knows..lol. I tried to check the ph on some dunder from the last multi gen cm fiasco. Only to figger out all my test kits use eye chart comparisons which dont work well for weak coffee colored stuff. Soon realized the little dauber strips be the answer but I was fresh out wouldnt you know..kick kick. Thought for a bit of just dumping some sodium bicarb down in there but then I am tired of screwed up ferments so I dumped it on the ho made rock gizmos where the grass grows up through the cracks. That should teach it a lesson.
Some of the Aussie folks speak of putting some of the backset in the finished wash prior to running. Wonder has anybody ever tried that? I am officially scared to death of that stuff as regarding putting it in at the start of ferment. Hopefully this is some type figment phobia of an infertile imagination. Hey I just did a quick google on ideal ph dunder and got some hits to the no name yankee place going back to 2009. Person might could root some info out of there if they wanted lower the standards enough to visit. I did not notice any other likely looking sites.

I tried the color comparison strips...but I can only tell contrasting colors apart (kinda sucks being an Electrician, but so far make due). I use the the AquaChek TruTest strips for the digital reader. Thats gonna be the plan anyway!

Ideal PH is 4 to 4.5 before fermentation.

Thanks Bushy. You saved a lot of wasted steps on that one. Hey Fuse..Best of fortunes with the digital liquid ph meter. Each time I have got brave enough to buy one of them pricey gadgets the sales clerk seems dedicated to talking me out of it. Dont take long to convince me not to spend money..lol.

Tried the Aqua check strips got an Err PH was out of the test range. Read the manual online and range is pH: 6.1-8.8 Guessing I was below that. The soil PH tester reads 5-6... but not sure on the accuracy. So there ya go Big Wheel the lady that talked you out of buying one of those just saved you $50 or so!

What a deal thanks for confirming my suspicions..lol. Even us hicks know a person cant use a soil ph tester for liquid. Hey I have a plan. Maybe you could buy some strips that check lower on the scale..hopefully in the target range..then dump half a cup of baking soda and give it a stir and a check...with the high acid dauber strips..and proceedeth on to finish line in such fashion till the goal is reached. Now if this aint feasible repoat back. Since you been having good success with it thus far..might be best to press on ahead and see how far it will go in the present configuration. If it works anything like my SF version the volume just gradually tapers off in rather well delineated increments. I vote for adding half a cup baking soda to it and seeing what happens..lol. I do not see how the soda could hurt it. I dumped some in a contrary wash one time and it didnt come out any worse than it woulda had otherwise. Just trying to cover all the bases here. That was the run I officially figgered out I was killing the ferment with the back set..whew.
