Just wondering what, if anything an airlock will do for odor coming off a mash bucket. So far I've just been using a cloth with a pony tail holder from the boss over the pour spout of a canola oil bucket. Get some odor, and makes the boss a little suspicious. Does the water in an airlock take out the odor?

not that I've ever noticed. Dont know how you would actually filter the air escapeing but that might be a good project and maybe even a $$$ maker if ya figger that one out and paten it.

Like they said doubt you will get rid of it all but if you only have a cloth over it and worry about the smell then running a tube from your fermenter to a little bucket Of water will help. That's what I do and I only get small hints of mine on occasion.

"A little dab of mouthwash added to the water in your puke bucket will tame down some ferments to keep the wife and boss off the trail. Or as one authoritative board member would post. 1. 2.5 foot 5/16 inside diameter hose from fermenter to, 2. 32 oz. container 3. Fill container with 250 ml of purified tap water that has made two trips through a Brita water filter. 4. Add 15 ml of a premium mouthwash to purified tap water. 5. Position burp hose 1/4 inch from bottom of 32 oz. container for maximum effect. Thanks DrDan! The problem is my fermenter is in the garage and I'm going to have to move the process indoors as the garage ain't heated.

I have the same issue.. Just brought mine in last night as it dipped down in the 30s. Like I said with just water mine has next to no smell. I think I will add some mouth wash try it and post back. I think it will do the job as water alone does decent for me. I'm using a 1/4in tube from my bucket to about an inch of water.

If you take a one qt jar with a lid and punch two holes in the lid the same size as the hole in your fermenter. Then run a rubber hose from the fermenter to the jar and push it into one of the holes all the way to the bottom from the other hole run a rubber hose just a half inch into the jar and fill this jar with water half way up. This will act as your air lock. Take another qt jar and punch one hole the size of the rubber hose and one small hole the size of a nail. Push the rubber hose comming from your air lock jar all the way to the bottom of this jar and fill the jar with activated charcole. This will get rid of the smell. You will need to clean the jars between runs but it worked for me when winter hit last year."
