Has any one heard of corn starch being used instead of corn, to make a wash. A friend told me that he had heard of it being done, with just Corn starch, water, sugar, & regular bakers yeast. Can anyone let me know if this will work, before spend a lot of time for nothing Thanks.

Bite the bullet and buy some corn and do the mash right. I think the finished product is only as good as the original mash. I currently have corn maize and malt fermenting cost a little more to do but the results are worth the price.

It could be done though... It would require heating water and mixing starch into it,allowing it to cool and then adding the enzyme to convert the starch to sugars. Possibly using a combination of 'Beano' and malt. I have not personally tried this but I think that the science behind this recipe is essentially correct. However, the congeners would be noticeably different in their makeup and the resulting alcohol might therefore taste similar to a stripped-alcohol and lack body, bouquet and a palatable taste. That's my guestimation from available data.

You can put corn starch in a mash, with enzymes and it will convert, but it would be much cheaper to just use corn.I have used a pound of corn starch in a beer mash before, and it gave the beer a different flavor{corn},but flaked maize worked better.Just use cracked corn, and malted barley.I just bought a 50 pound bag of cracked corn for $6.79,and its real clean. Its for chickens, and made by cargill. wineo

I haven't tried corn starch but corn sugar does a pretty good job for making a good whiskey or bourbon base.
