Would it be bad to use a glass carboy or other glass jug as your boiler for a still?

No! Not unless you have a Pyrex ,borosilicate glass, container this would not work. The temperature differential will crack the glass. You could use one of the heavy plastic ,polypropelene, carboys that some homebrew shops are selling if you have an internal electric heating element. Boilers made out of stainless steel stock pots, milk cans and beer kegs seem to be the favorite and are better for many reasons. You should also be able to buy a boiling chamber from Brewhaus or some other outfit. These are nice as you can boil beer in them as well as use them for a still. Go to homedistiller.org for some ideas on design and to see pictures of what others have done.

Thats right. ALL modern Kegs i.e. less than 20 years old are Stainless. If in doubt, you can check the markings on the keg. It will tell you the manufacturer and the type of Stainless i.e. 306 it is.
