"I have done several spirit runs and have a couple of dozen pint canning jars with distillate and am curios as to the best way to store it (diluted or not) and where's the best place to store it? I have to admit I'm getting a little nervous about the quantity on hand and problems that may occur if someone comes knocking...if you know what I mean. I wish I had someplace off my premises that I could store it. I'm at least going to move it out of my hooching shack. I have a couple of 5 gallon gas cans I use to store water and thought I could empty one of those and fill it. Should I reduce it to 90 proof before storing? Would welcome suggestions.

Regards to all.."

Big fan of glass for consumables. 2 quart masons work well. I'd store unproofed since space seems to be a concern.
Unless you are selling it seems a bit paranoid to worry about the bulls rushing the door over a couple gallons.

Hi cczero,
You can store all you want at my house and if it will make it easier to transport you don't even have to dilute it :) oh and if the feds come knocking I'll do my best to get rid of the evidenceWink. Seriously as long as your not broadcasting that you are making alcohol (and not selling it) you should not have any issues (unless you have a pissed of neighbor who knows). And remember just because your paranoid doesn't mean there not out to get you :)

Thanks for the offer (storage) but the transportation costs will probably be too much. I bought another dozen quart jars over the weekend (thanks to ohyeahyeah) so will store undiluted in another building on my property. Maybe I could add some food coloring to make them appear as canned something (yellow, red, blue, green???) LOL. Also thought about the ""Distilled Water"" gallon jugs but don't know how they would hold up with 90-94 ABV ethol inside though."

Hey, No problem, I'll come pick it up :). Seriously, be sure to only use glass gallons. Hi abv alcohol will leach nasties out of the plastic jugs. If you dilute to 40 proof then plastic should be ok.

"Don't be nieve to the dangers of storing ethanol.
Ethanol straight from the still is as flammable as gasoline. Storing uncut in a 5 gallon carboy; is building a bomb in your basement. Think Molotov cocktail on your shelf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molotov_cocktail
I live in earthquake country and need to expect the unexpected. Even during an earthquake, if there is a fire that is in any way related to your uncut, YOU will be charged with production. That will null any insurance you or your landlord has, and put YOU in deep deep legal shit.
I only store very small amounts of uncut in heavy glass bottles such as a champagne bottle or protected mason jars indoors. Large amounts of uncut belong outside away from structures or in a stainless steel container. It is much safer to cut it to 80-100 proof if you need to store it indoors.

The only legit reason to outlaw distilling is safety, and John Q Law will not show you any mercy if you hurt someone.

Be discreet, don't sell, be safe, and have fun.:)

Sorry to be so preachy, but its got to be said."

Really? Ever seen Everclear just exploding on the store shelves? A glass carboy will store it just fine, but treat it as you would stored gasoline. None-the-less I always cut mine to 45% after aeration and then store it.

"I learned the hard way if you choose to leave it uncut ie: to aerate with coffee filters on top, that it will evaporate in the hot summer temps. I had several pints aerating and got busy and left them in the shed for a cpl weeks, and returned to find most of it gone! The angels got drumk off their A...s !! Lesson learned

Farmin

P.S. I usually leave it uncut in glass, or cut in gallon plastic apple juice jars (see apple pie!) or half gallon fruit juice jars (same reason)

I also got a CrownRoyal jug the big one not sure how much it holds but it too looks cool so that in the rotation too."
