What is the best method for sanitizing plastic corboys? We have 2 glass and two plastic, using boiling water is dangerous and I am afraid could melt or damage the PTE.

I have been sing a sodium or potassium metabisulfate solution on both for years-- just rinse after sanitizing as would be expected Also see equipment rinse in the brewhaus forum http://www.brewhaus.com/Additives-C91.aspx

Should we mix it as directed in the clean carboy? How long should it set before rinsing and using?"

Hey Shelby, you should use 2 oz per gallon of water. As for letting it set, a couple of minutes is fine. Just wash thoroughly and rinse. I prefer OneStep sanitizer myself because there is no need to rinse after sanitizing but the potassium metabisulfate will work just as well if that is what you prefer. Best of luck.

The solution is re usable. Store it in a gallon jug. As long as it smells terrible it is still good. I rinse if i am going to use the container right away for fermenting.for fermenting

BamaDave and Scotty, thanks for the good info from both of you. I was not aware it was reusable or what the procedure was. We lost 15 gallons of wash as a result of poor sanitation. I am loving my new hobby!!!

Trade name Beer Clean is a sanitizer I use with my wine. Same stuff bars use, available online or at restaurant supply houses. I've never had a carboy go bad just using Easy Clean either, but it's not a legal sanitizer.

"just my .02$. Starsan is a no rinse sanitizer and for me it has worked quite well.
It is reusable..if applied correctly and stored correctly
I mix a spray bottle and I also have one of my fermenters about half full (or half empty) and when I decide to make a wash I swirl nice and vigorously then pour it into another bucket to store it. It is called a no rinse sanitizer but i rinse it anyway cause it leaves a salty taste behind.
It comes as a concentrate so a jug lasts a long time from what I have found. When my spray bottle is low I just transfer some from my fermenter, I do go through quite a bit cause everything that touches my wash is sprayed or sanitized but the last one I bought is now ohhhhhh 16 months old.
I read that someone had something growing on top of the wash because he dipped out the floating grains.....if that dipper was sanitized it prolly would have been fine, oh well---- I always say sanitation is a good thing."

I have only had one wash go bad, and it was my fault. Not clean enough. Lesson learned. All I use is hot water and a good dish soap and THOROUGHLY rinse. No issues since.
