After mashin the grain to make beer. Then I drain the liquid into a boil pot. I sparge the grain in the tun to get a particular volume in the boil pot then apply heat in order to start a timed boil as required for adding various constituents such as hops.

For bittering hops add to the boil at the beginning. for Aroma hops add in the last 2 to 5 minutes. The volatile oils in hops is is what adds aroma and they are eliminated during the boil. For hops aroma dry hopping is best, or adding hops oil after the ferment and before bottleing is even better. I'm not sure what else your adding but if it's for flavor, such as spices, then I add it to the boil. If it's for aroma, depending on what it is, I'll add it the last 2 to 5 minutes or to the ferment. For adding to ingrediants the boil I add as soon as the pot is on the flame. I don't wait to see the whites of their bubbles.
Have Fun.

So you are saying that as soon as you apply the heat you start timing the "Boil". Then boil is just a word but not actually seeing bubbles or a rolling boil.
The WORD boil is what has me confused. I use recipes for now and they call for diferent constituents added at diferent times during the boil.

OHHHH I see. Sometimes I'm just thick. I time my boil as soon as it starts to roll.
Have Fun.
