"Scotty, I might be able to help out ... I've done some Programmable Logic Controller work. I saw your thread the last time ... but I thought you were just rocking out with PLC (the band Pigmy Love Circus). Although I never got the impression that band was quite your style. --JB"

John right now i use PIDs for my still control. I dont use them as they were intended though. I have a k sensor installed at the base of my still that allows a ssr to remove voltage from a DPDT mechanical relay. When the voltage is removed from the coil it goes back to N/C positiion and removes the 240 and applies the 120 volth to the 6kw heat element giving me the variac controlled 120 volts.
The second PID just monitors the temp at the top of the tower.
OK OK-- now for what i want to do. I believe i could do the next major mod by incorporating 3 or 4 more pids with sensors but i accidently tripped over the automation direct website and found a clic PLC which has about 8 inputs and 6 outputs. Basic electro mechanical stuff is not hard for me to understand I even have a very small amount of basic programing back when my trash80 ONLY UNDERSTOOD dos.
But im afraid i dont have a clue as to what language the PLC uses to sense inputs and activate relays or solenoids.
I believe that One small PLC wil enable me to controll the applied voltage--- sense when i have 150ml of fores- activate a 3 way N/O solenoid to collect heads Then de activate it at 190 degreesF. and activate a second one at the same 190 deg. F. to collect hearts. As the head temp finally rises a bit above 190 degF. another switching to collect tails.
I vision 3 N/O 3way solenoids in series with the output of the leibig to accomplish this.
As an added feature, the water circulation pump will be turned on and possibly another whatever monitored.
John i have no experience with these devices. I have some free software that the company gives and it isnt good enough to teach me.
Im just recently re entheused about the project but am very shaky about whai believe might ve simple input comands-- i just dont have a clue---
THATS MY STORY :

scotty,
The PLC language I played with was a bit like a pascal/C hybrid: it was strongly typed but had mostly C-like syntax. There are several languages out there. Send me a web-link via PM and I'll dig around a bit.
Some of the robotics hobbyists and hams like to use PIC uCs that offer basic language support. I've never used one of those but I hear they can be very capable for small control apps. A hardcore hardware-geek I worked with (a good friend) used them all the time for his robotic spiders and such. The hams use them for all sorts of things. You might want to see if one of them could meet your requirements. The down side is you have to deal with all of the I/O conversions ... I believe the I/O is all 3.3 volt ... so you'll need some external circuitry. Another plus is that there's a decent amount of open source out there.
If you ever want to try using and FPGA with a soft core and program in C just let me know. I have some old boards laying around and the tools are available online. But be forewarned, this stuff is another bottomless pit. You can spend years playing with it ... and never feel the need to get back to stilling!!

I have experience working with allen bradley systems. We use rslogix for trouble shooting and modifying the ladder logic. I'm not going to b.s., my experience is limited to diagnosis of bad cards, pretty much like i said using the ladder logic for trouble shooting or making small changes in the existing ladder logic. If you have specific questions i could talk to one of the electronic techs(both amazingly knowledgeable) i work with who are much more versed in it.
