ok, can someone please put this to rest for me. I have doing a lot of research and there doesnt seem to be a clear cut answer anywere! I know there are a lot of people out there who would like to take this subject out back and shoot it but im very curious. Absinthe is very interesting to me and i am wondering if there is any possible way i can purchase/make absinthe that produces a hallucinogenic effect? If there are no hallucinogenic effects then why drink somthing that looks like radiator fluid? I would like to try it just one time if it does infact give you a hallucinogenic effect. Please Please everyone help on this one and I can figure out if its worth pursuing further or not.

You seem to be following in my footsteps from awhile back. I too wondered if there truly were some magical properties to 'true' absinthe. I've read every article I could find on the web regarding this, and every claim to be a purveyor of 'true' absinthe. My research initially stems from a theory I'd read that some true cajun recipes included absinthe as an ingredient used during preparation. I still cannot confirm nor deny this. What I can surmise is that absinthe was made from a variety of substances ,albeit a there were a few that were common, some a necessity to call it absinthe,, that produced a liquor of sorts. This liquor was usually very high in abv% ,to the tune of 120-180 proof,. Some sources compare what was termed 'absinthism' as alcoholism. Who really knows for sure. As for consumption, I have ordered absinthe essence from Gert, mixed it up into a 120 proof mix, and I must say it is very satisfying. I can tell you that it may not be for everyone, but if you like the taste it is pretty good. As far as a hallucinogenic, I can't really vouch for anything there. I didn't see pink elephants, or green fairies, but the stuff was pretty good. It did make for a nice relaxing, settling cocktail after a big meal. Being the proof that I mixed it up, I can assure you it would produce some weird effects if consumed in quantity. Hope this helps shed a little light on your query. If you are interested, try Gert's web site. I'm not sure if the absinthe essence you order from there has any thujone in it or not, but it is pretty good stuff. In any event....laissez bon temps roule.....

I think the halucigenic properties come from the wormwood. Wormwood was left in the trail of the serpent when it left the garden of Eden. It has been researched for many years and it is rumored that wormwood is an herb not to be reckend with. A scientist once in his experimentations with wormwood was found on his laboratory floor drooling from his mouth and not remembering anything about his experience which was caused from wormwood. This is from my earlier days of reading and working with herbs.

There have been a lot of 'stories' over the years, but basically no proof. In fact, many of the studies insist that thujone is not the drug that it is accused of being. Keep in mind that Sage has as much or more thujone than Wormwood, ,as does Cedar Oil,, but there is no concern over Sage. Also keep in mind that anything with a 70% abv content is bound to knock people on their butts much faster and harder than many other spirits of lower proof.

Freebrew hit well on this, Absinthe comes from the distillation of wormwood or wolfbane as some call it. It was a popular hallucinogenic from the 1790"s to 1820"s or so. It has come to light in recent years because of movies like "Van Hellsing and Harry Potter. I would not seek to distill this as this is not like just dropping acid or something. This stuff can kill, you can halo to the point of stupidity of doing something out of your normal activity that could put you at risk. To search out wormwood and try to distill it just to hallucinate would be a stupid endeavor. But if you seek this, I have no recipe to offer for the distillation of this herb. But is an easy herb to come across in North America. Good luck!
