I finally discovered that the problem with my grain mashes was that I wasn't re-running them; I can't believe that as long as I have been a member here I haven't been told to do this!
It now seems to be common knowledge and it works!
I don't know what the best process for the beginner might be but please keep it simple, I have tried recipes that were very unconventional and with bad results! They all produced ethanol but were unpalatable (as in they sucked)!
